Steph Michalow:

Growing up in a family of engineers and health care professionals, I never seriously considered a career in the arts. However, I did engage in many creative pastimes as a child, from designing a unique handwriting for each of my stuffed animals to taking the landscaping into my own hands. (My mom wasn’t too thrilled with the fish pond I dug to beautify the yard.)

My moment of clarity came during the winter of my senior year of high school. I had been gloating about a painting I was working on, and casually mentioned to my then-boyfriend how I wished that I could do this for the rest of my life. His reply was simple – “Why don’t you?”

I couldn’t think of a good reason not to.

Four years later, I believe that majoring in design was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Where else would I be able to surround myself with so many fascinating people who share my passion for technology, my quirky sense of humor, and my fanatical obsession with gorgeous typography?
